THE PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

The VOCATION project (an acronym for VOC Analysis for healTh monItoring Of grapevines and tomatoes plaNts) focuses on precision agriculture, aiming to develop an integrated technology solution to improve the accuracy of predictive models for phytopathological risk. Using innovative sensors based on IoT paradigm, the project aims to monitor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in grapevine and tomato crops for early detection of pathogens. This approach aims to make the approach to phytosanitary treatments smarter and support the ecological transition of the agricultural sector.

OBJECTIVES

The VOCATION project aims to develop an IoT paradigm-based low-budget sensor for monitoring VOCs in the field and an adaptive prediction model for grapevine and tomato blight. Goals include creating a digital technology that supports sustainable management of phytosanitary treatments, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural practice in terms of resource use and decreased emissions.

TECHNOLOGIES AND METHODOLOGIES

The project involves Lifely’s identification of low-cost sensor technology, identification of artificial intelligence strategies for mapping the detected compounds, and design and implementation of an IoT device capable of communicating the information to the cloud. Laboratory and field activities will be used to validate the technological solution from a functional and practical point of view.

LIFELY will be responsible for the realization of the prototype device for the detection of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and in particular those molecules that characterize the health status of plants. All stages of development will take place in close contact with the ALSIA CNR partner for the development of an effective solution in the detection of said substances and with the Primo Principio partner to materialize a low-cost solution capable of representing a new support tool in the field for farmers, companies and agronomic consultants, indicating to them symptoms of infections or states of stress.

MISSION AND IMPACT

VOCATION is committed to providing farmers with an advanced tool for early pathogen detection, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and waste reduction in agriculture. The project has no direct or indirect negative impacts on DNSH’s six environmental objectives, but aims to support the ecological transition of the agricultural sector. The collaboration with Lifely and ALSIA enables the combination of expertise in IoT and precision agriculture, amplifying the impact and scope of the project.
