The IoT of 2022: the main sectors

The evolution of these technologies is very dynamic and proceeds so fast that it is difficult to keep up with them. In Italy, the post-Covid years were a period of strong growth for the IoT. In fact, according to the search for Internet of Things Observatory of the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano , from 2021 the market has recorded an increase of 22% compared to the previous year. At the same time, devices using IoT technologies have increased, thus creating new services for the population.

Let’s now try to define some of the main sectors in which IoT innovations are most used in the current year.

MEDICAL SECTOR

Especially after the emergence of Covid-19, many medical devices are benefiting more and more from the IoT. In fact, through the use of these technologies there are numerous benefits including the reduction of hospital costs, the remote monitoring of vital parameters and, above all, the reduction of the risk of error.

According to some research, the monitoring of patients remotely through the use of IoT technologies is constantly increasing. It is estimated, in fact, that from 2020 to 2027 there will be an annual growth rate, reaching the value of almost 43 billion dollars worldwide.

Such equipment can obtain and collect useful data to monitor the patient’s health even remotely, thus avoiding unnecessary movement. The data is then sent to software applications to be viewed by doctors, so that the patient is constantly monitored.

The use of the IoT in the medical sector allows a more accurate and precise data collection, with a consequent decrease in the risk of error and a more timely application of the necessary treatments, even in countries and regions more inaccessible and difficult to physically reach from the healthcare personnel.

MANUFACTURING SECTOR

This sector is the one that most of all has initiated complete digital transformation paths from an IoT perspective.

The main objective of this transformation is to increase safety at work but there are countless uses of the IoT in the manufacturing sector: from the optimization of machinery, verifying their conditions in such a way as to improve the quality of the work performed, to monitoring of the workforce, predicting market phenomena and monitoring work efficiency.

ENVIRONMENT

We live in a historical period in which the issues of environmental sustainability and the climate crisis are at the center of concerns around the world. In this context, IoT technologies are a great tool that many companies are using to implement sustainable natural resource management strategies. Let’s think, for example, of smart agriculture, or the use of 4.0 technologies in the traditional agricultural sector: through the use of sensors certain parameters are monitored such as irrigation or climatic conditions, thus avoiding unnecessary waste and limiting resource consumption. natural. The adoption of IoT devices in the agricultural sector is constantly increasing; in fact, the size of the global smart agriculture market is expected to triple by 2025, reaching approximately $ 15.3 billion.

In conclusion, the Internet of Things market is now at the center of the innovation process. Companies that are about to implement such digitization processes in their work need a long-term vision, given the sudden evolution of this market.
